5 days in Kittery Point

Indian summer in Maine with 2 big dogs

Now 8 years old, Annie & Lulu were rescued by Nancy & Mike, who were asked not to separate the 2 sisters, who were adopted together when around 18 months.

Although the two siblings look rather impressive, they are very quiet and sweet. Mixed breed, they have probably labrador and pointer roots.

They looked rather  anxious when Nancy & Mike  packed and pretty sad when they left, waiting behind the moskito door ; but as soon as we took their leashes, they seemed happpy  to wander around.

The weather was fine, the colors of the trees gorgious. Unfortunately we could not unleash them : we were told the recall was not perfect, and Annie could show some agressivity towards other dogs.

At first sight, the two dogs looked pretty the same, in fact they were quite different :  Annie was darker, Lulu a little thicker and more brown than her sister. Annie was obvioulsy the dominant one : when we walked the two, she always  wanted to stay in front. And she was the first to eat : Lulu often waited before her bowl, waiting Annie had finished hers before eating her cribbles.

As we had closed our bedroom door the first night of our arrival, the dogs went to sleep on their couches downstairs. But, as soon as we left that door open, they prefered to lie on the floor. Near us while we were reading in bed or on a sofa protected by a blanket. Annie & Lulu  were not allowed on furniture !

We had to pay attention : both were able to catch any food left in the kitchen. As Nancy has told us : they were "counter surfers". We experienced that : our sliced loaf of bread was eaten in our back !

Annie & Lulu  could easily stay alone during 6 hours, having a dog flap, and electric collars which prevented them from trepassing neighbours' lawns. But we never left them alone that long.

Many lanes around the house allowed us to discover Kittery Point area,  lovely colored houses without any garden fences : that's so different from Europe. where everybody seems to hide behind walls and  gates !

When we left them to go shopping -many places and restaurants were not dog friendly-  they welcomed us nicely on our return,  obviously  delighted to have company again. But they looked really happy when their leashes on, we opened the boot of their masters' car ! They understood we would go all of us to the nearest beaches : Fort Foster was only 4 miles away.

During the high season, dogs are only allowed to go there before 10 AM and after 5PM.

In october, there were no more restrictions : tourists were gone ! We were probably the only French around...
